Higher prevalence of IBS in patients with GERD

Investigators from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the University of California Los Angeles in Los Angeles, California, United States have found that patients with gastro-oesophogeal reflux disease (GERD) are more likely to have IBS than patients without GERD.

A survey of 84 patients showed that 35 subjects had GERD. The majority (71%) of these patients also suffered from IBS. Of the patients who did not have GERD, only 35% had IBS. The observations were supported by the measurement of acid levels in the oesophagus
