Preliminary findings from two recent studies suggest that fructose and fat may contribute to gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and dyspepsia.
IBS is characterized by abdominal discomfort, bloating and change in bowel habits (constipation or diarrhea). Dyspepsia is used to describe a combination of symptoms from the upper gastrointestinal tract, and is sometimes known as chronic indigestion.
Researchers at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics found that that one-third to one-half of patients with IBS symptoms are fructose intolerant. Fructose is the simple sugar found mostly in honey and many fruits. But just as lactose intolerance tend to produce symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhea in IBS patients, the less recognized fructose intolerance has also been found to bring on the same symptoms.
In this study, symptoms and prevalence of IBS decreased significantly in the group that avoided fructose in their diet. For those who did not comply with a fructose-restricted diet, their bowel symptoms remained the same. In another study to identify dietary factors related to IBS and dyspepsia symptoms, the Mayo Clinic and Foundation recorded the daily food intake of 111 subjects for a week. They found that subjects with gastrointestinal disorders consumed a significantly greater amount of fats in their diet. No such differences were observed for protein, fiber, iron, calcium, niacin or vitamins.
