Quiz

There are many diseases that can easily be confused for IBS. Always consult your physician for a proper diagnosis of your symptoms. This quiz is not intended for you to diagnose yourself. Only your doctor can make that diagnosis. The risk assessment questionnaire below is divided into 2 sections. Section 1 is based on the essential criteria for IBS that help professionals make the diagnosis of IBS. Section 2 features those symptoms that support the diagnosis of IBS.
Section 1: Do you suffer from IBS?

Q. Are you troubled by continuous or recurring pain/discomfort in the abdomen?

Q. Does a bowel movement help relieve abdominal pain/discomfort?

Q. Is the onset of pain/discomfort in the abdomen accompanied by a change in the frequency of bowel movements (either more or fewer bowel movements than usual)?

Q. Is the onset of pain/discomfort in the abdomen accompanied by a change in stool consistency (eg, either soft stools or hard/lumpy stools)?

Section 2: Symptoms of IBS?

Q. Do you often pass either watery/loose or hard/lumpy stools?

Q. Do you have fewer than three bowel movements a week?

Q. Do you have more than three bowel movements a day?

Q. Do you at times feel that the bowels have not emptied completely after a bowel movement?

Q. Do you need to strain to pass motion?

Q. Do you, at times, experience an urgent need to pass motion?

Q. Do you pass mucus (white material) with stools?

Q. Do you suffer from bloating or a feeling of abdominal fullness?

If you answered yes to three or more questions to each of the above sections, you might have IBS, please do contact your doctor for a more detailed diagnosis.
